Online payment plans help self-assessment customers

Nov 9, 2022

Customers unable to pay their self-assessment tax bill in full are paying in monthly instalments online, says HMRC.

Almost 21,600 self-assessment customers have signed up to HMRC's time to pay (TTP) facility since 6 April 2022. This is an increase of around 3,900 people compared to the same time last year.

Time to pay is a tailored payment plan that allows taxpayers to set up monthly direct debits for their self-assessment bill.

To qualify for the plan, customers must file their return for the 2021/22 tax year at least 60 days before the payment deadline. They must also owe less than £30,000 and prove that they can pay in full within 12 months.

Those who owe more or need longer to pay must contact HMRC directly.

HMRC is encouraging taxpayers to file their returns early in order to give themselves more time to access support and advice.

Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's director general for customer services, said:

"We're here to help customers get their tax right and if you are worried about how to pay your Self Assessment bill, help and support is available. Visit GOV.UK and search ‘help pay Self Assessment' to find out more."
